We knew that the EV-1 worked: we had dropped 3 marine batteries in the Baker forklift and moved it under its own power from the driveway to the garage where it was ultimately dissected.

Folowing the dissection, I wasn't 100% confident I could get the rats nest of wires, switches, selectors & cables figured out to make the controller work again.

After a banging my head against the wall a few times trying to figure it out, ultimately it was coaxed back into service for a test. (See next photo).
